AmaZe sat down with Jessica Svoboda, the creative force behind SVOBODA, Inc. (svoh-bow-da), a plus-size apparel design company committed to delivering fashion-forward, flattering clothing options to full figured women.
[Valery] Why design exclusively for the plus size woman?
[Jessica] Traditionally, plus-size women haven’t had a wide array of options when it comes to fashion; in the past their choices have been extremely limited. I think that plus-size clothing has been dowdy and boring for far too long, and it’s been just recently that women are starting to discover that there are stylish options out there for them. I wanted to create a fashion line exclusively for plus size women because it is important to provide hip and trendy clothes for all women, regardless of size differences. I can’t tell you how many times a curvy woman goes shopping with her smaller friends and comes home empty handed. SVOBODA provides her with more options.
[Valery] How did you find your passion in plus size clothing?
[Jessica] I think that my passion for SVOBODA and fashion in general came from my own personal experiences. I’ve been plus size most of my life and have always had a difficult time trying to find flattering and stylish clothes that fit my lifestyle. I would spend all day shopping, ready to spend money, and return home with nothing. One day I decided I’d had enough and began taking fashion design classes at a local college; shortly after, I created SVOBODA. . I couldn’t bear to walk into another plus size store and look at the drab and shapeless clothing; I was motivated to create fashionable clothing for the curvier woman.
[Valery] What sets SVOBODA style apart from other exclusive plus-size designs?
[Jessica] SVOBODA is a stylish line of plus-size clothing designed specifically for fashionable full-figured women – we’re not just a “bigger” line of size 4 styles. What looks great on a size 6 may, or may not, work on a size 16 body. When you create clothes for a full figured woman, you can’t simply add fabric, you have to think about flattering that fuller figure. For example, our jeans have larger pockets to minimize a curvy rear and about an inch higher waist in the back for ample coverage. Our premium denim, curve-hugging fits, and colors that set us apart from other plus size fashion lines.
