Spring Beauty Product Reviews with the Beauty Blog Junkie,
Wendy Shanker

We’re ready to spring into spring!  After the longest winter (with the weirdest weather ever!), any day that hits over 60 degrees on the thermometer with even the slightest hint of sun feels like a holiday. When I was in high school, we’d get so excited about the whiff of spring that we’d drive around in my friend’s VW with the top down -- teeth chattering, goose-bumping, at least pretending to be so happy!  We just had to fake it for a bit longer, until summer officially showed up.

FAKE ITI checked out products that fake summer looks for this beauty blog. And if you don’t want to risk it…you can spritz it!

Tarte Rest Assured Luminizing Wand

Tarte’s Rest Assured Wand makes for perfect Monday Morning makeup.  You’ve heard the theory that putting a little white line in the corner of your eye or on the lower lid can make you look bright and vivacious?  Tarte suggests you try a natural color pencil instead – then use the sheer pink highlighter to shed a little glow on cheeks, brow bones, etc. You’ll look like you got sleep, instead of got drunk. / $22 at www.tartecosmetics.com and select Sephora stores

spring beauty products Mir 10 Texture Tamer

I’ve had basically the same hairdo since I was a kid – a bob with bangs. Aside from one cowlick that will never go away, my hair is usually pin straight and frizz free, allowing me to skip a lot of hair treatment potions (I hate even having hairspray in my hair).  Not so for my curly-headed sisters.  They need special products to tame the frizz and rock it Julianna Margulies or Aida Turturro style.

One curly girl I know tried Mir Miracle 10 Texture Tamer, in place of her usual straightening balm, conditioner, de-frizz spray, and shine gel.  And while it still takes a while to blow it out…her hair was bouncy ringlet city.  Mir says it also works defining curls if you want to stay au naturel.  But we’re fakin’ it!  / $16 at www.bodywealth.com
Pout Sexy Sunwear: Ultimate Fake Tan & Instant Shimmer Tan

Pout is ready for you to go faux this spring and fake it all summer long with their tanning and bronzing products.  The Ultimate Fake Tan is a lotion that goes on easily and will deepen over time.  The Instant Shimmer Tan lives up to its name – it’s a little deeper in tone than the Ultimate Fake, but the golden shimmer will wash off at the end of the day.  Plus, it will complement just about every color and complexion and smells like an exotic island.

spring beauty products
Just be careful that you don’t get “Tan Hand” – when your palms get all dark and goopy from spreading on tanning lotion.  Think gloves. / $20 for Ultimate Fake Tan and $20 for Instant Shimmer Tan at Victoria’s Secret stores across the country
Aveda Petal Essence Triple Accent Pencil Aveda Petal Essence Triple Accent Pencil

This Aveda pencil may look simple to you – but it’s literally the Swiss Army knife of pencils masquerading as simplicity!  The all-natural pencil works as a highlighter for eyes, and color for lips and cheeks.  The gold leaf/geranium combo is a perfect transition from spring to summer, providing a cheery red and a faux summer golden glow.  / $18 at Aveda salons, spas, stores or www.aveda.com

SPRAY IT

If you can’t say it…spray it.  A bunch of fun new products are out on the market if you want to get your spritz on this season.

Pearl Mist

Pearl is considered an “Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizing Mist,” and can take the place of heavy face creams when the weather gets warm.  Use it as a primer under makeup, or for touch-ups during the day.  It was created by a Hollywood makeup artist who knows a little something about setting makeup in the sun – she worked with the cast of Baywatch, among other credits.

Whether or not Pearl gets rid of wrinkles, well…your face will appear smoother, and that’s a start.  Its top ingredient is water, so either way moisture is good.  / $39.99 at www.dermafresh.com

Pearl Mist
Model in a Bottle

Model in a Bottle

Model in Bottle is a setting spray – that means it goes on after you apply your makeup.  Think of it as…hair spray for your face.  No, no, don’t think of it like that at all!  It’s not sticky or tacky and it has a lovely, gentle garden scent.  It will feel a little strange the first few times you use it…but then it’s no problem.

(And while it does not contain SPF, it won’t reduce the sun protectant effects of your makeup.  You do have SPF in your makeup, don’t you?)

Please remember to TEST THESE THINGS OUT before you spray them all over your face.  You never know what your skin will react to…and all we need is you on that sunset cocktail date with a face blown up like a blowfish.  / $18.00 at www.modelinabottle.com

King of Shaves
Shave & Smoothing Shaving Spritz

The oncoming spring means you’re gonna get to show off your gams – but you might want to give them a good shave first.  The popular British line King of Shaves has now created the Queen of Shaves – or at least a new product called King of Shaves Woman.  Their Shave & Smooth Shaving Spritz is a genius idea – instead of drying soap or goopy foam, you spritz on this moisturizing solution, massage it into your skin, and crack out the razor.

King of Shaves Shave & Smoothing Shaving Spritz
While it’s best to use in the shower or bath when your skin is already nice and soft, you can even spritz it on the run to avoid that “Oops, missed a spot!” look. / $5.99 at www.drugstore.com, www.shave.com/usa, or your local Rite Aid
Aveda’s Caribbean Therapy Flower Water

Aveda’s Caribbean Therapy Flower Water

I once went to a spa where we were freely encouraged to spray our faces with a combo spritz of water and rose water oil.  It was so refreshing, and it smelled so light and so good.  Aveda’s Caribbean Therapy Flower Water does the same thing – hydrate, moisturize face and scalp, and freshen mood.  Let me remind you – you don’t drink it, you spray it.  It has natural ingredients like Caribbean sea salt and glycerin from coconuts.  The scent I tried was fresh and floral.  This is the perfect item to stick in your carry-on for plane-related spritzing. / $25 at Aveda salons, spas, stores or www.aveda.com

Sonya Dakar Aromosal Mist

There are three phases of skin care in every beauty junkie’s life:  the teen years, when you kick off with Clearasil and Oxy10 (back in my day, it was Phisoderm – remember that gross sponge?), then you start playing with products from the department store in your 20s…and when you hit your 30s, you get serious about skin.  That’s when you buy Sonya Dakar products.  Her Aromasol Mist is a spray-on toner that helps repair damaged skin and balances normal skin.  It comes in several “flavors” including Acne, Scarring, Irritation, and Discoloration.

Sonya Dakar Aromosal Mist
I tried the Maintenance formula, and found it to be refreshing in its scent and its feel on my face.  And it’s chock full of natural ingredients, like Dead Sea Minerals and Geranium and Rosewood extracts…so say it AND spray it. / $25 at www.sonyadakar.com or 1-877-72-SONYA

Now we’re only weeks away from the real deal – sum-sum summertime!  Be sure to email us with your favorite summertime beauty tricks and products – maybe we’ll include them here!

XO

Wendy
