An Interview With Executive VP of Public Relations for Baby Phat, B.J. Coleman

VSG for AmaZe: In your own terms how would you describe the Baby Phat conglomeration in just a few words?

BP: Powerfully Glamorous while being Fabulous and Sexy.

VSG for AmaZe: When creating products, what were some of Baby’s Phat lifestyle image goals?

BP: Kimora and all of her brands Baby Phat, KLS and Kimora Lee Simmons the goal is to empower and inspire Women of all ages, multi-culture and multi ethnicity to live their dreams with the pride that being a women is something very special. VSG for AmaZe: Kimora, who now has 4 1/2 star success author to add to her, can we be on the look out for any follow Up’s? BP: Yes, the next venture will be a series of children’s books for her ‘Girls.’ VSG for AmaZe:  Kimora, was a Muse for Karl Lagerfeld, is there a Baby Phat plus-size Muse? BP: There isn’t a Baby Phat Muse because we are every women and we just make it fit in size and sprit

VSG for AmaZe: In preparation for showing in the tent during New York’s Fashion week for the next season – Spring 2007 that’s happened in September in Bryant Park, NYC , is there any “Rituals or Pre-show tradition?”

BP: The closest thing to tradition is that two days before the show we are together for almost 36 hours completing the finishes touches, so it is a time of true bonding we eat three meals together.  

VSG for AmaZe: Baby Phat is one of the only designer labels who shows in the tents and produces a collection for plus-sizes. Is there any ‘push back from the curvy consumer?’ 

BP: None, because we see no difference between the 6 and the 16 girl. They are both women who want to be sexy, “Powerful and are Street Chic” no matter what size you are. We are lifestyle brand and it’s important to all of us at Baby Phat that we deliver glamour and luxury. Kimora wants to keep everyone who is interesting in buying her clothes. From our advertisements to our public relations  events and outreach with news in the media: we do not exclude anybody. 

VSG for AmaZe: Last Question, can we expect to see at a Baby Phat show the first plus-size Model to walk down the runaway under the New York the tent anytime soon? 

BP: Anything is possible, keep on the look out!
